The Department of Education is the pioneer in the introduction of post graduate diploma in physical Education in Sri Lanka in 2000. In addition to departmental academic programmes, this building is being utilized for the conduction of International seminars, local research seminars and collaboration programmes with the MOE and provincial Ministries.
In the Future, with the recruitment of qualified academic members, the department hopes to re-establish as a Faculty, create new more short term courses and diversification programmes to address to the requirements of the teacher education system in Sri Lanka.
The Department of Education (DoE), University of Peradeniya (UoP) has had a long and remarkable history. In 1949 the Department of Education of University of Ceylon was established in Colombo. From its beginning this department conducted the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme of studies which supported the professional training of graduate teachers in the country. This programme of studies was very parallel in composition an in conduct to Post Graduate Certificate in Education in the University of London and some other Higher Educational institution in the United Kingdom.
