Faculty of Dental Science

The ELTU at the Faculty of Dental Sciences was established when it was felt that the level of competence in the English language was low among the new entrants to the faculty.

General Objectives

At the end of the Intensive Course in English the students should possess an adequate knowledge and proficiency in the English language, which will enable them to follow the professional course in Dental Sciences successfully. Further more, the ELTU provides the students continuing reinforcement of the English language skills gained during the intensive course.

 

Course Duration

The course in English is conducted for a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum period of 6 months depending on the time of admission of students to the faculty.
Formal classroom learning for students is 20 hours per week. In addition, informal activities ie. Reading and listening assignments, introductory dental course lectures from academic staff also form part of the Intensive Course. At the end of the Intensive Course, students are offered an on going course in English which is optional and is conducted along with the professional course.

Course

A placement test is held at entry for all students in order to grade them according to their level of proficiency in English. The lowest level of students9 test score below 40%) are admitted to the course first for a period of 2 months. The rest join this group at the end of the 2nd month and the course continues till termination.
The areas of English proficiency focused on are: reading and comprehension, speech, listening and writing. All teaching activities are directed towards achieving skills in this area.

Evaluation

Weekly formative evaluation of performance is done in order to enable students to assess their strengths and weaknesses in the English language. End of semester evaluation ( in all four skills) is also conducted which is mandatory. Student evaluation of the course is obtained at termination of the course.
