Faculty of Engineering

More than twenty five years, the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) of the Faculty of Engineering has been dedicated to teaching undergraduates subject-specific English related to Engineering to help them follow their courses in English. It organizes English courses to enhance the communicative competence required of these students (almost all of them complete their secondary education in Sinhala/Tamil) in the faculty.

The foundation course conducted for a period of 8-10 weeks prior to the commencement of academic programmes in the faculty is designed with the objective of enabling students to perform such tasks as reading and understanding textbooks, laboratory handouts etc., listening to lectures and taking down notes, writing course work, laboratory /project/ industrial training reports and making small presentations on the projects they do. In addition it offers two compulsory courses, namely QE101 and QE102 (which make up three credit courses) during the first and second semesters respectively. It also assists students in correcting their course work, project/industrial training reports etc.

Involved in the teaching of English to 350+undergraduates admitted to the faculty annually are two permanent instructors, seven temporary instructors and some visiting instructors (who teach at the ELTU during the foundation course)
