Societies & Activities
The English Literary Association (formerly the English Students’ Association) caters to the literary interests of students in the Department and others in the University. Over the years, the Association has organised events such as Debates, Skits, Poetry Readings, Book Launches and Socials to welcome first year students sometimes in collaboration with associations like SLACLALS. The Association produces a journal named Kaduwa which was begun in the early 1980s, The Department is also closely associated with the DramSoc and the Music Society. Invariably, several committee members (including the Senior Treasurer who has to be a member of the staff) are drawn from the English Department.
The Department holds the Annual Ludowyk Memorial Lecture in honour of the late Professor E.F.C. Ludowyk, the first Professor of English in the University of Ceylon. The lecture was made possible when Dr. Ian Goonetileke, a friend of Ludowyk, donated the royalties which he received for posthumously publishing Ludowyk’s autobiography Those Long Afternoons to the English Department to institute this lecture. Dr Goonetilleke also donated a Shakespeare Prize in memory of Ludowyk with the rest of the proceeds
