Dr. Rekha Nianthi obtained her first degree, B.A. (hons.) with a First Class in Geography from the University of Peradeniya. She received her M.Sc from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, supported by the NORAD Scholarship, and obtained the PhD in Geography (Applied Climatology) from NEHU, India in 2005. She is currently a Senior Lecturer.

Her main research interests are in Climatological studies especially climate change adaptation (including tank cascade studies) research in Sri Lanka.  She also serves as consultant for various National and International Projects.  She authored more than 60 research papers (including paper presentations, published abstracts, and unpublished reports). Some of them have been published in  international publications and presented papers at National and International Conferences. She has been awarded a certificate for the book titled on "Global Warming and Climate Change" (Sinhala version) and certified as a library book for schools, by the Central Province of Ministry of Education, in Sri Lanka, in 2003.  Dr. Nianthi has been awarded a "Presidential Scholarship" by the Sri Lanka Government for "Foreign Short Term Training Program" conducted at the Mainz University, Germany in 2005.  She was the Visiting Scholar in International Environment and Disaster Management Laboratory of Kyoto University, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, under the "Start-up Research Grant" of Kyoto University, Japan in 2006. She was appointed as the project leader of the Building Resilience to Tsunami in the Indian Ocean: A joint project of ADRRN (Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network) and Kyoto University, Supported by UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and EU, in 2007/08. She is a member of the "Asian University Network of Environment and Disaster Management" (AUEDM) and also a member of editorial board of the "Asian Journal of Environment and Disaster Management" (AJEDM) since 2009.
