PHY 403 - Philosophy of Marxism

The aim of the course is to introduce Philosophy of Marxism (Marxism as a non-conventional and unorthodox philosophical system). It will look at classical Marxist philosophy as well as post-Marxist theoretical developments of the 20th century, namely, the Philosophies of Lenin, Gramsci, Adorno, Althusser, Habermas, the Frankfurt School, Derrida and the Post-Modern Marxism of Fredrick Jameson.

Course content:

  • Historical Materialism, Dialectical Method, Matter and Consciousness, Concepts of Man, State, Labour, Class, Religion, Alieneation, Society and Revolution. Students will also be exposed to the ideas of Post-Marxist thinkers such as Lenin, Gramsi, Althusser, Habermas, and other important writers on Marxism such as Karl Popper, Sartre and Derrida. Post-Modernism and Marxism (Eagleton, Callanicoss, Fredrick Jamson)
