Welcome to the Department of Tamil


The Department of Tamil is one of the oldest departments of the University of Peradeniya. The eminent Tamil scholar Swami Vipulananda was appointed as the first Professor of Tamil in 1943. He was succeeded by Professor K.Kanapathippillai who was the head of the department from 1947 to 1965. Prof. Kanapathipillai laid a strong foundation for Tamil studies at Peradeniya. After Prof. Kanapathipillai’s retirement, the Headship in Tamil was held successively by Professors V. Chelvanayakam, S.Vidyanandan, A.Veluppillai, A. Sathasivam, S. Thillainathan, K. Arunachalam, M.A. Nuhman, T.Manoharan and V. Maheswaran during this period the Department of Tamil developed into a reputed center of Tamil studies in Sri Lanka as well as in South Asia. Professors have been functioned as head of the department and did well for this department. At present Dr. (Mrs) S.R. Theaver has took charge of the department and doing well to bring up the department.

  • The Contemporary Tamil Workshop, graced by renowned personalities from Tamil Nadu, including publisher Mr. Kalachuvadu Kannan, researcher Mr. A. Ra. Venkatasalapathy, writer Perumal Murugan, and Musician Dr. T.M. Krishna, was held on June 24, 2024, at the Viththiyananthan Auditorium of the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya. The event took place under the leadership of the Head of the Department, Prof. S. Pirashanthan, and it is noteworthy that former Head of the Department, Prof. M. A. Nuhman, also participated and added distinction to the occasion.

  • On Teachers’ Day in India, students attended a special Tamil teaching seminar at Poondi Pudupam College, where Professor Pirashanthan delivered the keynote speech. Students from Peradeniya and Pudupam College performed folk songs.

  • The international research conference jointly organized by the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya and Tamil University - Thanjavur was held on October 30, 2023, at PGHIS Seminar Hall based on the theme ‘Tamil Nadu - Sri Lanka: Art - Literary - Cultural Relations’. The event was very successful under the leadership of Head of the Department of Tamil Professor S. Pirashanthan.
    Dr. E. M. P. C. S. Ekanayaka, Dean of Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, visited as the chief guest of the event and to inaugurate the event. Also, Prof. C. Thiyagarajan, Registrar of Tamil University, Tanjavoor was also present as a special guest.
