
CSHR is a separate entity attached to the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. It functions under the purview of the University Senate, similar in status to other centres that already exist at the university.
Centre for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) strives to create a society that is articulate, critical and activist concerning matters of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
The mandate of CSHR allows it to plan and execute its own programs, promote and assist other governmental and non-governmental institutions to carry out relevant programs and coordinate and monitor the activities undertaken by these institutional partners.
The promotion of knowledge of human rights is the main goal of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights. It intends to achieve this goal through multi-disciplinary educational and research activities involving university community and the public.
The Centre conducts two human rights courses namely Certificate course in human rights and Diploma in human rights under the academic supervision of the University Senate. At the university level, the Centre undertakes such activities as strengthening of existing HR teaching programmes, organizing Guest Lectures, awareness and Training of Trainers workshops, research and publications.Our outreach activities are organized under three programme headings, namely, the Public Awareness Programmes, the Workplace Focused Programmes and the Village and Estate level Programmes.
The Centre for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) at the University of Peradeniya is calling applications for the following courses.
Duration of the Course:
Two months - Classes will be conducted only on Saturdays from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm
from February 2026 onwards.
Medium of Instruction:
Sinhala and Tamil Mediums in Class Mode;
English Medium in Online Mode
Course Fee:
Application Fee: Rs. 1,000/=
Course Fee: Rs. 20,000/= (payable in two instalments)
A 25% discount on the course fee for full-time undergraduate students and students
with special needs will be offered.
Applicants must have passed three (03) subjects at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in one sitting and be an active participant in the Human Rights or Community Development sector will be prefered.
Duration of the Course:
Eight months - Classes will be conducted only on Saturdays from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm
from 17th January 2026 to 19th September 2026
Medium of Instruction:
Sinhala and Tamil Mediums in Class Mode
Course Fee:
Application Fee: Rs. 1,000/=
Course Fee: Rs. 40,000/= (payable in two instalments)
A 25% discount on the course fee for full-time undergraduate students and students
with special needs will be offered.
Applicants must have passed three (03) subjects at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in one sitting and should have completed a Certificate Course in Human Rights offered by the CSHR or any other institution recognized by the Governing Board of the CSHR / Having at least two (02) years of experience in Human Rights or Community Development activities in a governmental or non-governmental organization is preferred.

Registration Fee, Rs. 1,000/= and course fees should be deposited into the Account Name: Arts Faculty Research Fund, Account No: 0001274686 at Bank of Ceylon
The fully completed application form along with the bank slip of Application Fee payment of Rs. 1,000/= should be sent by registered post to the address ""The Director, Centre for the Study of Human Rights, New Kannangara Building, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya"" on or before 27.02.2026 for the Certificate Course and 20.02.2026 for the Diploma Course.
Note: The 1st instalment of the Course Fee shall be paid during the course registration.
