Field Visit to Pinnawala: Exploring Ethics in Animal Welfare and Conservation
On March 14, 2024, the students of the Department of Philosophy embarked on a field visit to Pinnawala, as part of their Applied Ethics subject. This visit provided an invaluable opportunity to explore the ethical dimensions surrounding animal welfare and conservation efforts, with a focus on the renowned Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, known for its commitment to the care and rehabilitation of elephants.
At the elephant orphanage, students participated in discussions that examined key ethical issues such as the treatment of animals, human-animal relationships, and the broader implications of environmental conservation. These discussions allowed students to apply theoretical ethical principles to real-world situations, offering insights into the challenges and complexities of moral decision-making in contemporary society.
The field visit proved to be a rich learning experience, encouraging students to critically engage with ethical dilemmas related to animal rights and sustainability. It deepened their understanding of moral responsibility, fostering reflections on how philosophy can guide real-world ethical practices and contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable world.
A degree in philosophy provides versatile skills that are highly sought after in many fields, including law, education, public policy, business, and even the arts. Philosophy graduates excel in roles requiring problem-solving, communication, and ethical decision-making.
