ELA1101: Basic English for Humanities & Social Science 1 (Reading & Writing)

Course Aim(s):

The aim of this course is to enable students to read, understand and evaluate basic descriptive texts, and to write accurately at UTEL Band 4 Level of competence in the skill areas of Reading and Writing.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to

• Write answers to simple and moderately complex questions
• Read, with understanding, the general meaning of short texts of under 500 words, especially in relation to Humanities & Social Science disciplines
• Use basic forms of punctuation correctly
• Write appropriate short sentences grammatically, using the present and past tenses
• Use, with understanding, negation, simple passive structures and functions of basic modals
• Describe their immediate environment and basic subject areas
• Identify, analyze and summarize basic information as contained in written texts

ELA1202: Basic English for Humanities & Social Science 2 (Listening & Speaking)

Course Aim(s):

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand simple instructions, statements, notices and questions, and to be able to formulate these themselves. This will place them at UTEL Band 4 Level of competence in the skill areas of Listening and Speaking.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to

• Comprehend simple instructions, statements and questions with connectives
• Recognize the function of simple sequence markers
• Describe the main ideas contained in short spoken texts
• Respond appropriately to “wh” questions relating past, present and future
• Comprehend and use negation, simple passive structures and functions of basic modals
• Produce meaningful sentences about immediate environment and basic subject areas
• Speak 5-10 sentences on a given topic and respond to basic queries
