ELA3105: Advanced English for Humanities & Social Science 1 (Reading & Writing)

Course Aim(s):

The aim of this course is to ensure that students are successful at UTEL Level 6 in the Reading and Writing examinations, which is designed to enable students to understand and respond to a range of genres on a variety of issues of academic and general interest.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to

• Read and evaluate the spectrum of texts of general interest to undergraduates
• Read and assess texts of a variety of sub-disciplines within the disciplinary fields that come under the Humanities and Social Sciences
• Use, with understanding, different styles and registers, including descriptive, narrative, expository, argumentative and persuasive prose
• Write short essays, reports, articles and assignments using different styles and registers appropriately
• Respond in grammatically accurate prose to questions of a disciplinary nature

ELA3206: Advanced English for Humanities & Social Science 2 (Listening & Speaking)

Course Aim(s):

The aim of this course is to ensure that students are successful at UTEL Level 6 in the Listening and Speaking examinations, through being familiar and fluent in relation to both H&SS-related academic/professional and generic texts, as well as being able to discuss effectively a range of general issues at the appropriate level.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to

• Listen and summarize lectures of differing styles and registers
• Listen to lectures on a range of topics and answer questions effectively
• Identify discourse markers signaling changes of topic, opinion and emphasis
• Recognize diverse registers and their appropriate use in different contexts
• Ask complex questions and elicit responses, including opinions
• Speak with authority and confidence on relevant academic/professional topics
• Identify, analyze and summarize relevant information in short speeches and talks
• Make impromptu and prepared speeches on a variety of advanced topics
• Deliver effective presentations using a range of tools and software
