The Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, successfully conducted a workshop titled “Presenting Research” for undergraduates following the ELA 3206 course. The workshop, facilitated by Mr. N. S. Hewage, Senior Lecturer in the Department, aimed to equip students with the essential skills and strategies required for delivering effective academic research presentations.
The session was held on 13th June 2024, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the PGIHS auditorium, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, and was attended by undergraduates enrolled in ELA 3206. The workshop was designed to support these students as they prepare to present their individual research projects, a core component of their course assessment.
The primary objectives of the workshop were to:
Mr. Hewage explained how to plan and deliver a good research presentation, highlighting tips for engaging the audience and using visual aids effectively. Students also had the chance to learn presentation skills through examples, give feedback to each other, and ask questions. Students actively participated throughout the session, raising insightful questions and engaging in peer evaluations. Their enthusiasm and reflective responses indicated a strong interest in improving their academic communication skills as well as research presentation skills.
This initiative proved highly beneficial in preparing undergraduates for academic and professional communication contexts. By fostering essential presentation skills, the workshop contributes to the overall academic development of the students and aligns with the objective of the course of integrating language proficiency with research competence. The Department hopes to offer similar sessions in the future to equip students with more practice and support as they get ready for their final presentations.
