The Department of Geography of the University of Peradeniya began collaborations with two prestigious institutions of China, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) and Academy of Science (CAS) to study the regional water vapor transport, extreme precipitation, and disaster prevention in both countries. As the opening move of this joint undertaking, a fully automatic weather station meeting the highest standards was installed in the weather station of the Department of Geography and opened on 26th of March 2024. This is the first step in laying the groundwork for a sophisticated rainstorm disaster monitoring and forecasting system in the future. The proposed disaster monitoring system will have broad applications in field such as civil aviation, emergency weather monitoring, hydrology, and seasonal ecological observations.
