Ongoing Research and Projects

Research on the intersections between gender and hate speech experienced by women, girls and gender and sexual minorities online and offline

The proliferation of hate speech, further exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, represents an unprecedented challenge for our societies. The United Nation strategy and action plan on Hate speech defines Hate Speech as “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.” Although hate speech has always existed, its ever-growing impact fueled by digital communication can be devastating not only for the specific individuals and groups that are targeted, but also for societies at large. It may expose those targeted to discrimination, abuse including violence, but also social and economic exclusion. When left unchecked, expressions of hatred can even harm social cohesion, peace, and development, as it lays the ground for conflicts and tensions, wide scale human rights violations, including atrocity crimes. As part of the UN’s effort to tackle hate speech, the United Nations Population Fund and the UNWOMEN are conducting a gender analysis of hate speech trends, in terms of the identity of instigators, targets/victims, audiences and challengers, and of the impact of the hate speech.

Forging our path: Formulating an Organic definition of women/girl child headed households in war affected districts of Sri Lanka

Women Heads of Households (WHH) remain one of the most complex groups, identified in recent times (post-war) as one of the most vulnerable social groups in present day Sri Lanka that is dominated by a patriarchal values system. The island’s post-independence history of war, violence and conflict, its present continuing challenges due to altered forms of transgressions and violence, and new challenges in facing a pandemic and sustaining a battered economy along with future social, political and economic phenomena brings to notice the ever-present challenges Sri Lankan women face. This acts as a precursor for the impact such issues will have on women such as WHHs who lay in the fringes of the power-dynamic structure of society. Along with such are other contributing factors in the form of physical and mental disabilities, sexual bribery and violence, drugs proliferation, predatory microfinance schemes, lack of representation at policymaking level and the lack of legal and wellbeing support networks. Priorities for WHH wellbeing include the security, safety, dignity in treatment, financial and social security, socio cultural economic and political rights of these women and the guarantee of a better future for their children. This WHH group significantly includes minority women, women affected by war and women living under extreme poverty.

Prevention of trafficking and unsafe migration to Middle East in the tea plantation sector in Sri Lanka

This project seeks to develop a nuanced understanding of safe migration and human trafficking in the plantation sector. This qualitative study will interview migrant workers, returnees, and their families in Badulla, Matale and Nuwara Eliya to investigate the factors and consequences of labour migration in the plantation sector. The findings and recommendations will seek to fill gaps in evidence in relation to the plantation sector and safe migration. The findings will be used to create a stakeholder dialogue on the issue and develop an appropriate policy response. .
