Doctoral Studies in Greek and Roman Studies

The Doctoral Program in Greek and Roman Studies at the Department of Classical Languages assures the availability of a experienced faculty with a broad range of research interests and a rich collection of research materials possessed by the University Library.



Prospective Students

Students willing to register for the Doctoral Program in Greek and Roman Studies at Peradeniya should first contact the relevant faculty to discuss their research area and possibility of obtaining supervision. In order to do so,  they should have a good understanding of their own research interests,  an awareness of the breadth and depth of the preferred research area and of the works already done thereon and its understudied facets plus a clear idea of the objective(s) of their prospective research. 



Current Students

The students currently registered for the Doctoral Program in Greek and Roman Studies are required to contact their supervisors to arrange supervisory meetings on a regular basis. The following are a few guidelines for those who are about to submit or have already submitted their theses. Further guidelines can be obtained from the PGIHS, University of Peradeniya.

The effective date of the PhD degree is the date of the completion of the PhD thesis. Accordingly, the effective date of the completion of the thesis shall be ;

Without any corrections: the first day of the month following the date of the viva-voce examination.

With minor corrections: the first day of the month following the viva-voce examination at which the Board of Examiners determined that the thesis is of acceptable standard provided that the corrected thesis, along with a certification from the Supervisor(s) and the relevant Head of Department to the effect that all corrections required by the Board of Examiners have been made, is resubmitted in bound form to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, within the period specified by the Board of Examiners.

With major corrections or with minor corrections that have not been completed during the specified period first day of the month following the date on which the dissertation is resubmitted in bound form to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, with a certification from the Supervisor(s) and the relevant Head of Department to the effect that all corrections required by the Board of Examiner are made.
