Biography

Ms Arularasi Balakrishnan is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography, the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. She was born in Jaffna peninsula and received her primary and secondary education in Uduvil Girls College, Jaffna Hindu Ladies’ College and Puthukkudiyiruppu Central College in Mullaitivu. In 1997, she obtained the first rank with the highest aggregate in the Advanced Level (A/ L) examination and entered the University of Peradeniya under the Island merit from Mullaitivu district in 2000. Ms Arularasi completed her Bachelors of Arts (Hons) degree in Geography with a First Class in 2004 and won Prof. B.L Panditharatne Gold Medal for Human Geography and two prestige awards for the Greatest Competence in her undergraduate programme. In 2005, she joined as a temporary Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Peradeniya. In 2006, she was awarded a Quota programme Scholarship from the Norwegian State Education Loan Fund for two years to pursue her M.Phil in Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway. In April 2008, while doing her M.Phil in Norway, she joined the University of Peradeniya as a Lecturer (probationary). Currently, she is doing her doctorate under the Indian Commonwealth Scholarship in the Department of Geography at Bangalore University in India.
