Port Power of Small Island States: An Analysis of the Bay of Trincomalee and Trincomalee Habur in Sri Lanka

The study is focused on an analysis of the port power of Sri Lanka, paying attention to the geopolitical and strategic significance of the Bay of Trincomalee and Trincomalee Harbur, located on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka between Jaffna and Batticoloa. Being one of best maritime harburs in the world, the Trincomalee is strategically located in the Bay of Trincomalee, which is close to the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean. Its notable characteristic is the natural great depth of the inner harbor which is four miles wide and five miles across east to west which was originally used as a naval base with naval berths and a naval airstrip by colonial powers and has gradually been developed as a commercial harbur since 1958. It is naturally protected by terraced highlands with an entrance guarded by two headlands. Further, excellent circumstances in the Bay of Trincomalee, which is one of the major factors that shapes the geopolitical and strategic significance of the Trincomalee Harbur, provide opportunities for berthing and ship-to-ship cargo transfers at the Trincomalee harbur. The Navy and the Air Force of Sri Lanka have set up strategic bases on the eastern side of the Bay of Trincomalee. This research is expected to be completed by 2026.
