Field visit to the largest rice mill in Sri Lanka (19th Batch)

The Department of Economics and Statistics, the students who are taking Agricultural Development and Policy Analysis (ECN 4078) organized a field visit to the largest rice mill in Sri Lanka on 3rd December 2024, offering students a first-hand experience of the rice production process.

There were 23 students and 2 staff members. The visit included a guided tour where students learned about the various stages of rice milling, from harvesting to packaging.

They observed how modern machinery separates the husk from the grain and how the rice is processed for market distribution.

The visit not only provided valuable insights into agricultural practices but also highlighted the importance of rice in global food systems, making it an enriching educational experience.

Exploring Real-World Development: A Field Visit to the Moragahakanda-Kaluganga Project

Students enrolled in the course ECN 4060 - Project Planning and Appraisal from the Department of Economics and Statistics, University of Peradeniya, recently embarked on a field visit to the Moragahakanda-Kaluganga Project. This excursion provided an invaluable opportunity to bridge classroom theory with practical experience in one of Sri Lanka’s most ambitious water resource development projects.

The Moragahakanda-Kaluganga Project is a landmark initiative aimed at addressing the dual challenges of water scarcity and agricultural productivity. The project includes two major reservoirs, an extensive network of irrigation canals, and facilities for hydropower generation. It is designed to improve water supply for both domestic and agricultural purposes, contributing to socio-economic upliftment and regional development.

The field visit was organized to provide students with firsthand exposure to the complexities of planning, implementing, and appraising large-scale socioeconomic projects. It highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in addressing economic, environmental, and social challenges associated with development initiatives.

Welcome to Department of Economics & Statistics

The Department of Economics & Statistics is one of the largest and the oldest Departments in Economics in Sri Lanka.

The vision of the Department of Economics & Statistics is to be a center of excellence for creation and dissemination of knowledge in economics and applied statistics.

The mission of the Department of Economics & Statistics is to advanced knowledge in economics for the betterment of the humankind and its environment, and to produce accomplished graduates who are equipped with relevant economics knowledge, essential skills, values, and attitudes to make outstantding contributions to development.

The Department offers two Bachelor of Arts degree programmes, one leading to a general degree and the other to a special degree. The Department has the largest enrollment in a Special Degree Programme in Economics at any Sri Lankan university.

The Department also offers five postgraduate programmes: Postgraduate Diploma in Economics, Master of Arts degree in Economics, Master of Arts in Applied Economics, Master of Development Practice, Master of Philosophy degree in Economics, and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Economics.

The Department is equipped with well-qualified academic staff numbering 34, of which 25 are in permanent positions and 09 temporary. Of the 25 permanent members, 17 hold PhDs and 8 are MA or MPhil qualified.
