The first meeting of initiating the Economics Department-level mentoring program was held on May 11th, 2023 at the Lecture room, Kannangara building. Prof. Sri Ranjith, Head of the Department and the Department Mentoring Programme Committee members; Ms. Shobana Rajendran, Dr. Anuruddha Kankanamge and Dr. Thushari Vidanage addressed the students of Economics Special degree programme. The purpose of the meeting is to explain the importance and relevance of the mentoring programme and how the students are to be benefitted having a department-level mentoring program making the university life exciting and experiencing a successful academic programme.

A discussion on attitude development through positive thinking was held on 16th February 2023 at Department of Economics & Statistics. The discussant was Ms. G. M. Thakshila Samanmali, the director of Thakshila Senior Citizen Elder Care Home, Padukka. This session was organized to empower students who undertake the course ECN 3048 – The Economics of Entrepreneurship. It was a very productive session, as the discussant shared her own experience, struggles and challenges she faced during her journey to become an emerging female entrepreneur in the country. This session was a great opportunity for students to listen to a real story of a successful entrepreneur and to boost their self-confidence and positive thinking.
Click here for more pictures..The Department of Economics and Statistics had been organized an outdoor program "Fort to Pettah" on macroeconomic issues for the first year students. Here, the students presented various economic problems creatively in open area and answered the audience who had questions regarding the posters which were assessed as continuous assessments in their ECN 1002 course. The aim here is to go beyond the boundary of class room.

The Department of Economics and Statistics, University of Peradeniya presents to you the second chapter of its lecture series, with Environment & Community Development Specialist Mr. Kapila Rajapaksha as the Guest speaker. The discussion was based on the topic "The Environment, Marxism and Development" and has been held on Wednesday, the 2nd of February from 6.00p.m. onwards via Zoom.
The Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Peradeniya organized the first chapter of its lecture series on the topic, "The Tri-layer Crisis surrounding the Budget 2022" on the 8th of December 2021.
The Guest speaker for the event was eminent political economist, Prof. Sumanasiri Liyanage who was a professor in Economics, Department of Economics and Statistics, University of Peradeniya.
An audience of 120 consisting of academic staff and students joined the event.
The event concluded with an insightful discussion, where the guest speaker expressed his remarks and addressed questions that were posed by the academic staff and students.
The world is dynamic and its constant changes require us to evolve accordingly by upgrading ourselves.
Therefore, each year, the Department of Economics and Statistics organizes a series of seminars with an aim to create a well-informed generation of students with up-to-date knowledge and skills.
The past seminar series were conducted with the support of globally acclaimed institutions such as the World Bank.
