History of the Department


The Department of Arabic & Islamic Civilization is one of the oldest departments of the University of Peradeniya. It was established as a department in the Faculty of Oriental Studies in 1945. Islamic Civilization was introduced as a subject in the department of Arabic in 1969.
The department conducts Undergraduate programs in Arabic and Islamic Civilization and Postgraduate programs in Islamic Civilization leading to PhD Degree.

  • In 1957, the department started Master degree program leading to Master of Arts in Arabic.
  • In 1990s, Postgraduate Programs in Islamic Civilization was started.

The department has highly qualified staff members including Senior Lecturers who have published number of books and research articles. There are about 100 students following Arabic and 250 students following Islamic Civilization at the department.
We are proud to mention that this is the centre for the study of Arabic and Islamic studies because this is the only University which conducts Post graduate programs in the field of Arabic & Islamic Studies. The majority degree holders and the staff members of other Universities in the field of Arabic and Islamic studies are the production of this University.
