BA - Requirements, Fees

Postgraduate Diploma in Pali Studies
Duration: one academic year
The minimum qualification required for enrolment: a bachelor's degree in any subject area or any other academic qualifications acceptable to the Department and the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee. Those who complete the Diploma course will qualify to pursue Master's degree courses in Pali Studies.
Number of courses required: Five subjects of related courses
   
Students are required to offer five subjects
Fees –  
Registration –500 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]
Course Fee – 600 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]
Library (non refundable fee) – 100 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]

 

Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies
Duration: One academic year.
Number of courses required: Five subjects of related courses selected from the following.
The minimum qualification required for enrolment: a bachelor's degree in any subject area or any other academic qualifications acceptable to the Department and the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee. Those who complete the Diploma course will qualify to pursue Master's degree courses in Pali Studies. ( please format it as it is in the Pali Studies)
Students are required to offer five subjects

Registration – 500 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]
Course Fee – 600 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]

M.A. in Pali Studies
Duration: Two academic years (one year of course work and one year for dissertation).
Number of courses required: Six subjects of related courses
Minimum qualification required for enrolment: At least a second class pass in Bachelor of Arts Degree or an equivalent in Pali Studies or in a related subject area, or a pass in the Diploma in Pali Studies or any other academic qualifications acceptable to the Department and the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee.
Number of courses required: Six

Course Fee – 750 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]

PhD in Buddhist Studies or in Pali Studies
Basic Qualifications - M.A.(Research) or MPhil degree or equivalent in a relevant field
Could be registered at any time of the year
By Research only, Thesis 80000 words

Certificate Course
  Entry Requirements
 
G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination with passes in at least three subjects.
 
An equivalent qualification acceptable to the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, subject to the approval of the Faculty and the Senate of the University.
     
     
  Selection of Students
  Selection of students possessing the requisite entry qualifications will be made by a Departmental Committee on a priority basis, taking into account the academic merit of the applicants.
 
     
  Duration of Course
  The duration of the course will be one academic year consisting of two semesters of fifteen weeks each. A minimum of thirty hours of lectures will be conducted in respect of each course.
     
Certificate Course in Buddhist Studies
The course introduces the students to the Buddhist thought and culture under six subject areas: Basic Doctrines of Theravada Buddhism, Elementary Pali Grammar and Translation, Buddhism and Society, Elements of Buddhist Culture, Buddhism and Mental Health, and Buddhist Ethics. The course consists of 180 teaching hours.

Certificate Course in Pali Studies
The course provides a working knowledge of the Pali Language to those students who intend to pursue advanced studies in Pali language and literature or in Theravada Buddhism. It consists of 120 teaching hours in three steps:
Ability to comprehend and construct simple sentences
Competence to translate and compose complex Pali passages
Competence to comprehend Pali canonical and post-canonical literature

Course Fee – 1000 (US$) [half fee for Buddhist Clergy and SAARC]
 
Fees: US $1100 (US $550 for SAARC students)
     
  Medium of Instruction
  The course and the relevant examination will be conducted in the English and Sinhala media.
