About Us


Psychology

A degree in Psychology was first offered in the University of Peradeniya in the 1990 through the Department of Philosophy and Psychology. The department of Psychology got separated from the Department of Philosophy and Psychology and got established as an independent department in 2017. The department of Psychology during its short period of history has brought uniqueness and established quality education in the Sri Lankan Psychology Education System. Being one of the most recent departments to emerge, the Department of Psychology offers a specialized four-year degree as Bachelor’s in Arts (B.A) Hons in Psychology. In addition to the main degree program in Psychology the department also offers Essential Courses (ESS Courses) for the first and second years of the Faculty of Arts. Our courses are taught by a well-qualified panel of Academic staff with foreign training and practical exposure. In addition to teaching, the department also offers mental health services for students and staff to support and enhance their mental wellbeing.

Vision:

The Department of Psychology at the University of Peradeniya aspires to become a nationally recognized leader in both undergraduate post Graduate education. We aim to foster close collaborations among undergraduates, postgraduates to facilitate the learning of scientific principles related to behavior and mental processes. Our goal is to make significant contributions to the science and practice of psychology, ultimately producing professionals who can serve communities at the local, national, and global levels.

Mission:

The Department of Psychology is dedicated to achieving excellence in both undergraduate and post graduate education. We expect our graduates to embody competence and ethics, demonstrating a strong commitment to the science of psychology and its practical application in real-world scenarios.

Our undergraduate program establishes a solid foundation for the scientific comprehension of behavior and mental processes while encouraging scholarship and service. The graduate programs are designed to equip students with the necessary skills to become recognized professionals. These professionals are prepared to deliver evidence-based services to children, adults, and families across diverse healthcare and educational settings.

We, as department, foster an environment characterized by collaborative learning and scholarship among undergraduates and graduate students. We are dedicated in developing psychological wellbeing and wellness in the university of Peradeniya. This collaborative spirit is guided by the core values of our university and professional organizations.
