The Certificate Course in psychology and Basic Counseling Skills which is carried out by the Department of Psychology of Faculty of Arts was commenced in the year of 2016. This Certificate program was designed and carried out under the guidance of Prof.Danesh Karunanayake and all the senior and other members of the academic staff of the department of Psychology. Starting from the first batch in 2016, the Department of Psychology has successfully been able to produce 12 batches of students skilled in basic counseling knowledge, skills and attitudes that are fundamental and crucial in the journey of becoming successful professional in the field of counseling.
A number of well qualified resource persons within the department as well as from outside have contributed immensely in providing quality education for our CCP students. Further by taking steps such as renewal of syllabus time to time, the course has been able to provide the best education among many other institutions providing similar courses. Currently the 13th batch of the course is in progress.
By carrying out this program, we intend to produce professionals enriched in fundamental counseling knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary in providing best service to our community.
To provide knowledge and practice training in basic counseling skills
To provide basic knowledge in selected themes of Psychology relevant for counseling
To provide basic knowledge in ethics pertaining to psychological service provision
To cultivate greater sensitivity towards human pathology & respect for cultural diversity, difference and human values
This certificate program is offered in all the three mediums which allow the students to continue their studies in their preferred medium.

A degree from a recognized university or undergraduates who have registered in a recognized institute
OR
Non-graduates with a minimum of 3 S passes at the G.C.E. (A/L) examination
OR
An equivalent educational qualification acceptable to the Department of Psychology, University of Peradeniya with a minimum 3 years working experience in a psychology or counseling related field
The total number of hours that is covered in this certificate program is 90 hours.
