Department of Tamil students visited to South India

Final-year students of the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya, had the wonderful opportunity to embark on an academic tour to India in October 2025. This journey was not merely a trip but a valuable learning experience that deepened knowledge of Tamil culture, literature, and heritage.

Professor, Senior Lecturers, Assistant lecturers and the final year students of the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya travelled to India to participate in a workshop. The team was led by the Head of the Department Prof. S. Pirashanthan. The prior day of the work shop the team visited to the field trip.

It was planned to visit many historical places on the journey from Chennai to Madurai. Accordingly, students visited the Mahabalipuram, a historic coastal town renowned for its rock-cut temples and stone sculptures built during the Pallava dynasty. They visited the Shore Temple, Arjuna’s Penance and the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), which stand as masterpieces of Tamil art and architecture. After that, students reached Pondicherry and visited Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Bharatiyar's House and Aravida asramam. Then students visited to Chidambaram Nadarajar temple and Tanjavur big Sivan temple.

As part of this academic tour, the final-year students of the Department of Tamil, had the great privilege of visiting Madurai City, a historic and cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. During this stay, they were invited by the prestigious Madurai Tamil Sangam to participate in an enriching and highly informative programme titled “Public Speaking and Personality Development Workshop”.

Throughout the sessions, they had the rare opportunity to listen to and learn from many distinguished speakers and scholars who shared their expertise on various topics related to communication, leadership, and public speaking. Among them were: Nakkeeran R. Gopal, journalist – “Concept Development and Speaking Skills”, Dr. John Fathima, former District Educational Officer - “Storytelling and Stage Speaking”, Folk Artist Mrs. Rajalakshmi – “Voice Management and Stage Presence”, Dr. Barwin Sultana, Director, World Tamil Sangam - “Pronunciation and Reading”, Kalaimamani Nellai Jayantha, artist – “Expression and Style in Speech”, Prof. Ku. Gnanasaambanthan, eminent scholar – “Humour in Speech”, Prof. S. Pirashanthan – “Practical Training for Speakers”.

On 27th October 2025, a Certificate Distribution Ceremony was held to mark the conclusion of the programme. Receiving certificates from the hands of the Technology Minister of Tamil Nadu and District Collector was a moment of pride for all the students. These certificates, officially recognized and signed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, stand as a testament to our successful participation in this valuable academic training.

After the workshop sessions, students had the chance to visit Pazhamuthirsolai Murugan temple and explored numerous sites like Azakar kovil and lotus pond. After completing the workshop and field trip, students of department of Tamil returned to Peradeniya, with filled of experiences and the knowledge of new subjects.
